Environmental Responsibility

WE HAVE NOT INHERITED THE EARTH FROM OUR FOREFATHERS BUT INSTEAD WE HAVE BORROWED IT FROM OUR GRANDCHILDREN

                                                                     – LETS LOOK AFTER IT FOR THEM

The Wooden Toy Box selelcted CARBON.ORG.NZ to assist us in becoming a carbon neutral company. We pride ourselves on being conscious of our own carbon footprint, and that of our suppliers, and we make every effort possible to do our part for the environment. We offset our carbon emissions using some of Carbon.org.nz's many carbon offsetting options.

That is why we are selective of the products we provide and the suppliers we work with and the materials they use. Below is some interesting information regarding the materials used in the manufacture of some of our product ranges.

RUBBERWOOD

Toys manufactured using rubberwood are one of the most environmentally friendly toys in the world. Rubberwood trees from latex plantations are cut for replanting when they no longer produce enough latex, usually after 25 years. Then the wood is recovered and used in toy manufacture. The sawdust by product can be used to make fuel cubes, incense sticks or for food production. Studies have shown that rubber plantations can be as effective as natural forest in removing carbon dioxide from the air by converting it into rubber latex, soil and wood - making rubberwood an environmentally friendly choice.

BAMBOO

Bamboo is 16% harder than maple wood, 1/3 lighter in weight than oak, yet in some instances as strong as steel. Bamboo is a giant natural grass that grows as tall as a tree. Once cut, bamboo grows back completely in a mere three years, making it one of the most renewable resources known. Some species grow up to 2 feet per day.

After harvesting, bamboo does not require replanting, it has an extensive root system that continually sends up new shoots, naturally replenishing itself.  Bamboo holds the promise of a sustainable, cost effective, and ecologically responsible alternative to the widespread clear cutting of our old growth forests.

Unlike most other hardwoods, it absorbs very little moisture and consequently does not shrink or swell as much making it a superior choice of material for cutting boards and wooden toys. The bamboo grain has a wonderful tactile feel and is enhanced with a bright water-based paint.
